The platform has two mobile units featuring one CO2 laser each (wavelength from 10.2 to 10.6 µm) for thermal analysis of single grains (total fusion and step-heating). These lasers are able to heat grains at temperatures up to 1700 °C. These systems feature a fully automated (computerized) X-Y positioning stage for automated analysis (total-fusion, “rastered” step-heating for large populations exceeding the optimal beam coverage), with a full-frame coaxial monitoring of the experiment using zooming optics and camera in the visible range. These systems are independent of the UHV extraction unit and can be swapped between units to permit switching between CO2 or UV-based laser gas extraction on any instrument operated in the lab.
