Experimental insights into lunar basalt magmatism

Cordula Haupt PhD student in Experimental Petrology at the University of Muenster will present her research work at the next Magma/Geodynamics seminar.

Abstract

The lunar nearside has been visited by several sample return missions during the 1960s and 1970s and most recently in 2020. The lunar sample compendium contains intriguing igneous rocks, which serve as significant evidence of the processes which occurred within lunar interior and which shaped the Moon’s current appearance.

In order to understand the magmatic formation of lunar basalt, high-pressure and high-temperature experiments are the tool of choice.

This talk aims to illustrate how experimental petrology serves as a means to explore the origin of lunar basalts, thereby aiding to reconcile the petrogenetic history of the Moon.
