The VG5400 from Micromass is a mass spectrometer dedicated to isotopic measurements of all Noble gases. This instrument features a magnetic sector (variable magnetic field), a Nier source for gas ionization, an electron multiplier in ion-counting mode for low current measurements (< 100 fA) and a faraday cup for high currents. The controlling electronics have been completely replaced with new power and regulating units for the field regulation (peak-switching), ion source and beam collection control and are operated under fully automated computer control.
The mass resolution for this spectrometer is higher than 600.
