BET Surface Analyzer

Scientific correspondent : Claude Le Milbeau

Brand and model :

NOVA 2200e (Quantachrome)

Principle :

The sample is submitted to a gas adsorption in low temperature condition (liquid nitrogen) allowing the calculation of the specific surface developed by this sample. The determination of the surface is based on the analysis of the adsorption isotherm determining the volume of gas adsorbed in a monolayer. The volume of this monolayer is calculated according to the BET equation (Brunauer, Emmett and Teller). The results are expressed in unit area per gram of sample (m2/g).

It has two heating ports (from room temperature to 450°C) and two measuring ports, for two measuring stations.

Objective :

characterize soils or rocks by the specific surface developed by the constituent particles of the material (mineralogical clays, quartz grains, etc.)

Treated samples :

soils, rocks, clays, sand

Pre-treatment :

drying of the sample at 105°C, possible grinding
