Sub-micron porosity in viscously deformed, pure quartz aggregates

Micron and sub-micron porosity is found in many examples of viscously deformed rocks from shear zones (i.e. mylonites). In my thesis I study granitoid mylonites from Ikaria and Naxos (Greece) to try and understand how this micro-porosity forms. Monophase quartz shear bands containing porosity are examined using a combination of Electron BackScatter Diffraction, Hyper-Speectral Cathodoluminescence and Focused Ion Beam/Transmission Electron Microscopy.
